New York Mets fans fired up grills underneath the Van Wyck Expressway Monday ahead of the team’s debut at Citi Field. Just across the street, Willets Point stirred.
City Councilwoman Julissa Ferreras (D-East Elmhurst) and state Sen. Hiram Monserrate’s (D-East Elmhurst) chief-of-staff, Wayne Mahlke, joined workers outside Citi Field Monday to protest what they said was city harassment of local business owners.

I’ll have plenty of stuff on yesterday’s Citi Field protest and Community Board 7’s meeting from last night on Wednesday and Thursday, but I wanted to clear up one thing that was said at the rally yesterday since there was a lot of press there.
During a worker rally against the redevelopment of Willets Point yesterday, state Sen. Hiram Monserrate’s (D-East Elmhurst) chief-of-staff claimed that LaGuardia Community College’s Willets Point Workforce Retraining Program was screening potential applicants based upon their immigration status.
Reached for comment Linda Barlow, the director of the program, said that could not be farther from the truth.
